By William Sandberg: American Yacht Club Commodore Mike Bruno, 63, passed away suddenly early on the morning of August 13 at home in Armonk, NY. Mike was a very lucky man and knew it. He had a beautiful and strong wife (Meg) and three wonderful kids (Mike, Jr, Russell and Price) he adored, and they him and more friends and admirers than one could ever imagine. He had a successful business career. After receiving his MBA from Columbia Business School in 1981, he joined Solomon Brothers where he rose to become Vice President of the Mergers and Acquisitions Group within the Finance Department. He joined Stonebridge Partners in 1987, becoming the Managing Partner in 1989. He was an accomplished sailor on the race course, sailing a series of J Boats—the latest being the J/88 Wings. Ironically 2019 may have been his most successful year—winning his class at both Charleston Race Week and Storm Trysail Block Island Week. In addition to this year, he was a two-time winner of the J/122 North Americans, New York YC Race Week winner, and 2016 Key West Race Week. Along with American Yacht Club, he was a member of New York Yacht Club and Storm Trysail Club. Most of all he was, perhaps, the most generous person I have ever known. Need a house in Florida to use an auction item to raise money for the US Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Teams? You got it. A spectator boat for viewing? Of course. Rooms for wounded vets to attend a regatta? Done. And the list goes on. As Commodore of American, he played host to the US Sailing Disabled Championships in 2008. When approached about hosting a disabled regatta in the future, not surprisingly Mike quickly made it happen. Thus was born the Robie Pierce One Design Disabled Regatta, where Mike even served on the Race Committee. Most recently he served on the Board of and twice chaired the annual fundraiser for Freedom Waters Foundation in Naples, FL, which enhances lives of individuals with special needs and veterans by providing therapeutic boating experiences. A memorial service will be held at American YC in Rye at 1400 hours, Friday, August 16. As one of the largest offshore regattas in the Great Lakes, the Chicago Yacht Club’s Verve Cup Offshore has developed into a world-class regatta attracting many national and international competitors. From August 9-11, CYC hosted the 28th annual Verve Cup Offshore Regatta in an array of weather conditions over the three-day event. On Friday, a post-frontal, shifty breeze from the northwest started at 15 knots, then quickly diminished and swung to the north-northeast by late afternoon in the 5-8 knots range. Saturday saw a light east-southeast wind slowly build after a one-hour onshore postponement into the 4-8 knots range, with 40-degree swings. Sunday dawned with the possibility of another frontal system with thunderstorms. Fortunately, the front moved south. Out on the lake, the wind started in the SSE quadrant in the 4-7 knots range, then swung SSW to 240 degrees and increased in pressure to 8-12 knots, before oscillating from 230 back to 190 for the last two races of the regatta. The seven-boat J/88 fleet saw very close racing amongst the top four boats with just a few points separating them after seven races on Saturday. Those teams were Tim Wade’s WINDSONG, John & Jordan Leahey’s DUTCH, Andy & Sarah Graff’s EXILE and Ben Marden’s BANTER. However, after racing on Saturday, both DUTCH and EXILE protested BANTER for using a different spinnaker in race seven after shredding their primary kite in race six. While it is permitted to carry two spinnakers under J/88 Class Rules and use them, it turned out the second spinnaker on BANTER was too big by a few square feet. Instead of simply DSQ’ing BANTER for just the one race, the Jury tossed them out of all seven races. Also, WINDSONG protested EXILE in race seven and got them DSQ’d for extending their pole too early on the spinnaker set. The next day, Jorgen Christiansen’s USA 75 protested EXILE in race eight for the exact same infringement and got them DSQ’d again. As consequence of those Jury Room proceedings, Marden’s BANTER team withdrew from the regatta and Christiansen’s USA 75 team withdrew from the first seven races in solidarity for the BANTER team. The outcome of all the protest room drama was that Tim Wade’s WINDSONG won the regatta with three firsts, five seconds and a DNC in the ninth and last race for 21 points total (they had already won on points by winning race eight). The month of July in western Long Island Sound has traditionally brought light and shifty winds. For the past few years, however, Larchmont’s annual Race Week, held the third week in July, has enjoyed atypical conditions providing excellent sailing. And, while the sailing for the 121st Larchmont Race Week on July 13-21 was keenly competitive, the light and variable winds returned to heighten the challenge. The recurring theme of comments made by the competitors was that, to win, you had to "connect the dots" of puffs and shifts. The J/Boats family bid a fond farewell to Paul Heys who 'sailed away' in February this year. Before the start of racing, the 60-boat fleet gathered in the vicinity of the proposed location for the Paul Heys Memorial Buoy for a special tribute. Whilst observing a minute’s silence, Paul Heys' ashes were released in a seashell by his wife Marie-Claude, assisted by Paul's daughters, Gemma and Natalie. Over £25,000 has already been raised, covering the cost and maintenance of the Paul Heys Memorial Buoy for 10 years. The target of £34,000, will ensure that the buoy will be raced around by Paul Hey's grandchildren and those of the J/Boat familys. The Landsail Tyres J-Cup is an annual event in which all J/Boats are invited to attend, to race in one-design classes or under IRC. The 2019 edition was hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club with racing in the Solent. Sixty teams racing 10 different examples of the J/Boats range were in action with skippers from Great Britain, France, the Netherlands and the United States. All nine races were completed over three days of thrilling racing for over 300 sailors. Conditions ranged from moderate to fresh and frightening. Mother Nature saved her best until last with 25 knots of breeze in clear blue skies for the last race of a fantastic regatta. Competitors enjoyed the use of modern facilities at the Royal Southern Yacht Club, including the spacious Upper Bar with elevated views over the Hamble River. In the dining room, North Sails delivered a video debrief, a master class on heavy airs trimming and boat handling from: Dave Lenz, Ruairidh Scott, Jeremy Smart and Charlie Cumbley. Kirsty & David Apthorp's J/88 J-Dream was on the race podium for all nine races, including six bullets, to retain the J/88 National Championship for a third year in a row. A fleet of nearly 100 boats gathered for a sprint of 30.0nm from Chicago to Waukegan, IL. The first fleet started in a light easterly of 5-6 knots, but the subsequent starts were in nearly calm breeze. After three fleets could not fully clear the starting line, the Chicago Yacht Club’s Race Committee was forced to postpone the starts of the remaining fleets. Subsequently, as the next set of classes took off in the building breeze, it was clear the last class to start was going to have the greatest handicap advantage overall. In PHRF 4 Class, the J/88s nearly swept: Andy & Sarah Graff’s EXILE won, with Ben Marden’s BANTER in second place.

The 81st challenge of one of the most storied yacht races on the Great Lakes—the 90.0nm race called the Queen’s Cup—may have set a record for dropouts. This year’s overnight race across Lake Michigan departed from Milwaukee, WI for St. Joseph, MI on June 28 in very light winds, hosted by Milwaukee’s South Shore Yacht Club and St. Joseph River Yacht Club. The 2019 edition of the Round The Island Race in the United Kingdom, hosted by the Island Sailing Club in Cowes, Isle of Wight, was one of the slowest ever for most of the fleet. The challenging 60.0nm race goes around the Isle of Wight. The forecast of sun and no more than 15 knots of wind was unlikely to create record-breaking conditions for the 1,253 entries. Nevertheless, with an ebbing tide and early morning east-south-easterly breeze, the fleet enjoyed a downwind spinnaker start, so the first leg to the Needles was reasonably swift for most of the fleet. However, the forecasted easing of the breeze to zero knots and a change from the easterly to a light westerly around 1400 to 1600 hours took its toll on the fleet. As it turned out, heading away from the island into more stable breeze was the best option. The J/88s had three finishers. Winning was Sam Cooper’s TIGRIS, second was Richard Cooper’s JONGLEUR, and third was Dirk Van Beek’s SABRIEL JR. Legendary musician Jimmy Buffett made a surprise appearance at the final awards party for Block Island Race Week, presented by Margaritaville. Buffett took the stage to address the huge gathering of sailors enjoying Margaritaville margaritas and LandShark lager and expressed total enthusiasm for the regatta his lifestyle company sponsored this year. "I think Margaritaville is Block Island right now," said Buffett, who performed an impromptu concert to cap off Margaritaville Race Day. "I always thought it would be kind of cool to have a regatta that was part of Margaritaville. Thank you Block Island for being the very first one." Buffett, performing solo, then launched into renditions of ‘Son of a Sailor’, ‘Margaritaville’ and ‘Five O’Clock Somewhere’ to the delight of the massive crowd jammed into the big top tent. Wings, owned by Mike Bruno of Armonk, NY, was dominant in the J/88 fleet with seven bullets and a couple seconds. Wings has also won the J/88 Midwinter Championship, Charleston Race Week and the American Yacht Club Spring Series this year. "It was another great regatta for the team, and we were very pleased. The Helly Hansen Chicago NOOD wrapped up Sunday, June 9 in a shroud of fog, again. Morning rain and fog saw the remaining scheduled races cancelled on the third day of the regatta. Spirits were high, however, as competitors gathered at Chicago Yacht Club for the evening’s awards party. In the six-boat J/88 fleet, John Leahey’s Dutch was the top team. "Overall, we had a great time with some tough competition from Exile (Andy & Sarah Graff) and Windsong (Tim Wade), who were just a few points behind," says the skipper from Colorado. "We were looking for more competition (Sunday), but we were happy to take the win." Sailing with Leahey was Connor Coorgard (Blaine, MN), who served as tactician. "Connor was really good at playing the shifts. We started a race (Sunday), and we were way ahead before the race was abandoned. He had us going really fast, which definitely paid off in the end." The COLORS Regatta was hosted by Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago, IL from June 1-2. 1. Six J/88s completed five races, and it was Andy & Sarah Graff's Exile that took line honors in four. The second and final weekend of the 40th Annual American Yacht Club Spring Series in Rye, NY concluded May 5 in the same way it started on April 27-28 – with challenging weather that included little wind on Saturday and heavy rain on Sunday. Seventy boats competed in nine classes. Wings, helmed by Mike Bruno, placed first in the six-boat J/88 division and continued building on a hot streak that dates back to January with a win at the J/88 Midwinter Championship in St. Petersburg, FL. As Sunday dawned, it was still quite windy, but it had calmed down enough for the fleet to enjoy great racing on the Southampton Water and the Solent. Continuing to lead the J/88 class is Gavin Howe’s TIGRIS with all firsts in eight races, tossing out two firsts. Second is Dirk & Dianne Van Beek’s SABRIEL JR. with 12 points. Conditions varied dramatically over the two days, with medium wind on the first day, followed by a full-on foam-up of 20 knots plus on the second day. Air and sea temperature were also a factor, as mid-April is about as cold as the water gets in the Solent. Added to a bitter easterly breeze, it was a weekend for wrapping up and keeping warm. With six races, the J/88 fleet continues to see Gavin Howe’s TIGRIS topping the class with all bullets for 5 points. Sperry Charleston Race Week concluded April 14 in spectacular fashion with strong winds producing exciting action. Mike Bruno said following Friday’s racing (April 12) that he’s been jinxed at Sperry Charleston Race Week, suffering problems that prevented podium finishes in 2018 and 2017. The Armonk, NY resident thought his bad luck would be extended when his J/88 Wings was ruled OCS in Race 9 and had to restart. "We came into the day (Sunday) saying we were going to be conservative and not make any mistakes then we got tangled up with another boat at the start and right out of the gate we were over early," said Bruno, who did manage to battle back to finish sixth in the 10-boat fleet. "We were pretty glum going into the last race. I thought we’d blown it again." However, there was a happy ending as Wings redeemed itself big-time in Race 10, which was held in 20-22 knot south-southwesterly winds with gusts approaching 30. Wings rounded the first weather mark in sixth, then moved up a couple places by the downwind rounding. Bruno and crew turned it on from there, passing the remaining three boats to get the gun. That victory in the final contest of the three-day regatta gave Wings a two-point victory in the J/88 fleet over Albondigas (Justin Scagnelli, West Nyack, NY), leading Bruno to breathe a huge sigh of relief. "What an exciting way to win a regatta. To come from behind like that was thrilling, and I feel fantastic," Bruno said. "We’re pretty darn good in heavy air, so we were really happy when the breeze really came on for that last race. It was really exhilarating blasting downwind in planing mode and passing boat after boat." Bruno noted the average age of his crew is 60 with bow man Jonathan Asch checking in at 66. The fleet was blessed, again, with good enough conditions to get in one more race for the IRC handicap fleets. The forecast for the day was not exciting, E to SE, 4-7 knots. This eventually turned out to ENE to S and the back to ESE, with 3-5 knots for most of the day and reaching nearly 8 knots for the last half of the last race of the day. With four races under their collective belts in the J/88 fleet, Gavin Howe’s TIGRIS continues to dominate with all bullets for 4 points. However, the top five has jumbled a bit since a few boats had "no show DNCs" posted in their scorelines. Sitting in second is Dianne & Dirk Van Beek’s SABRIEL JR with 31 points, third is Richard Cooper’s JONGLEUR with 33 points, fourth is Kirsty & David Apthorp’s J-DREAM with 36 points, and fifth is Tim Tolcher’s RAGING BULL with 38 points. The J-sprit class continues to be dominated by the J/88s and by Gavin Howe’s TIGRIS, in particular, as she took her fourth win in four weekends. The next two spots have flip-flopped. It was another beautiful day for the final races of the Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta St. Petersburg. Once the sea breeze filled in, racing got underway and most Classes completed two races for a regatta total of eight to nine races. Top marks in the J/88 fleet went to Iris Vogel and the crew of Deviation, who struggled with shifty conditions and battled through a four-way tie for second place on the first day of racing. The team found its groove over the next two days and focused on boatspeed. "In this fleet, we had to be just fast," said Vogel. "Everyone is so close and so good. One mistake, and you go from first to fifth. Our goal is to get a good start and go as fast as we can and hold on to it." The 2019 edition of the Three Bridge Fiasco in San Francisco, CA will go down in the history books as one of the nicest in recent memory—sunny skies, gentle northeast winds of 4 to 12 knots and warm 72 F temperatures. The Singlehanded Sailing Society welcomed a fleet of 334 boats that were entered as singlehanded or doublehanded teams (most were sailing doublehanded). It is believed the race, a 21.0nm dash around three marks is considered the largest shorthanded sailing event in the world. Starting off Golden Gate YC on the south shore of the Bay, the sailors can choose which direction to go (clockwise or counter-clockwise). The marks are Blackaller Buoy near the south pylon of the Golden Gate Bridge at the westward opening of the Bay, around Red Rock Island near the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge in north Bay, and around the Bay Bridge by rounding Treasure & Yerba Buena Islands. Since the race is a reverse start (pursuit) race, the start time for each boat is based on its PHRF rating, with slowest boats starting first at 0900 hrs and the fastest at -102 starting two hours later. The Class 2 Singlehanded Spin PHRF 108 and Under class was won in convincing fashion by Jim Hopp’s J/88 WHITE SHADOW, finishing at 14:36:41, 23 minutes ahead of the next boat in class. Six J/88s escaped the Polar Vortex to compete in the J/88 Midwinter Championship, a part of J/Fest hosted by St. Petersburg Yacht Club in Florida. Mike Bruno’s Wings from Armonk, NY tallied 9 net points in 8 races after counting only firsts and seconds (dropping a fifth in race four). With team Mike Booker, Stu Johnstone, Chris Morgan, Tim Randall and Stephen Yip, Wings secured five bullets and relished the breezy conditions on Friday and Saturday, when four races per day were completed. Rain and unstable weather prevented any contests on Sunday. Iris Vogel’s Deviation took second place with 19 points, including two first-place finishes on day one. William Purdy’s Whirlwind also notched 19 points, but had to settle for the bronze position.
The forecast for Week 8 of the HYS Hamble Winter Series 2018 was for 12-30 knots WSW, with low water in the Solent at 12.30 pm. The J/88s saw a duel to the finish for class honors. Week six of the HYS Hamble Winter Series dawned with blue skies, beautiful sunshine, and a forecast for some breeze, though nowhere near as much as the two previous weeks. The forecast was for the wind to go to the East, but it was 060 when they arrived on station and it never went past 070. With that direction and the forecast in mind, PRO Kathy Smalley decided on courses containing triangles, sausages and beats. The number of triangles and sausages depended on the size of the boats. Class 1 and 2 would go to Royal Thames twice, whereas Class 3 & 4 would not. All fleets finished with a spinnaker reach to the hamblewinterseries.com buoy. There was significant, though neap, tide crossing the start line, and this made the decision on where to go interesting. The J/88s have been dueling it out for the balance of the podium in IRC 2 Class, as well as fighting for the lead in the J/88 One-Design class honors. At this stage, it’s a "dead heat: developing between Gavin Howe’s TIGRIS and David & Kirsty Apthorp’s J-DREAM. Both boats sailed their current discards: TIGRIS with a 7-12 and J-DREAM with a 7-11. So, with eight races gone and four to go, it is time to look at the story so far. For Class 2, Gavin Howe’s J/88 TIGRIS has 20 points in third place, just ahead of J-DREAM (Kirsty & David Apthorp) on 22 points. As a result, the J/88 one-design calculations show that Howe’s TIGRIS is winning the class, followed by the Apthorps’ J-DREAM in second and Dirk van Beek’s SABRIEL JR in third. Thanks to J/88 owner Bill Walczak on HORNET for this update on the Annapolis Fall Series: In the last four races, we got three firsts and a second. We had up to 24 boats racing in PHRF A2 Class. HORNET stung them all! The J/88 is a really fun PHRF platform. Here is what happened in each race.
Annapolis to Oxford: we had 18-23 knots downwind for 16 miles then reach with 3 mile upwind, 30 miles. That race was a scream, nearly a full-on plane for most of the race.
AYC race to Oxford: It was light; we had 3-6 knots abeam and downwind. We were 4 miles ahead of 14 boats in class when the RC abandoned the race, such a bummer. We were 1/4 mile from the shortened finish. That was our first ultralight air race and were all surprised how well our J/88 HORNET performed.
AYC race to Solomons: It was another windy race. We had 20 knots plus for 40 miles downwind, then we reached across the bay to the Pax river and finished. We won by 5 seconds corrected for the Overall win and crushed our A2 Class. We have been lucky with downwind planing conditions, but other planing boats have not kept pace with us. Last year’s race to Oxford, we had 17 miles upwind and struggled against the Navy 44s. However, once we turned the mark to reach off with a code zero, we simply took off and finished first by 6 seconds overall and won class.
One of the more popular end-of-season offshore races on Long Island Sound is the Indian Harbor Yacht Club’s Gearbuster Race. The race is a 46.0nm course eastward down the Sound from Greenwich, CT to Stratford Shoal and return. This year, it was pretty quick for some boats. Drew Hall on the J/88 NEVERMORE said, "We had a scream in the IHYC Gearbuster on our J/88. We were first in PHRF 3 Class, beating 49-foot boats and were 11th overall. We sailed very fast to Stratford Shoal and back. The wind was 8-14 knots with flat water."
The 2018 Fall Series Regatta ended at American Yacht Club in splendid fashion. Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30 concluded the latter half of the Fall Series Regatta which occurred over the course of two weekends. Saturday racing was met with an anticipated Fall feel as temperatures hovered below 60 degrees. Eight classes of boats embraced the chilly weather to compete on Long Island Sound. Saturday racing started off slow with little wind, but beautiful weather otherwise. In total, the South Course was able to get two races in. In the J/88 Division, Escape skippered by Elizabeth and Matthew Barry had a perfect day winning both races to move up to first place, tying with Douglas Newhouse's Yonder. On Sunday, the light wind continued along with beautiful blue skies. The South Course held one race on Sunday to conclude the regatta. The Storm Trysail Club and the Riverside Yacht Club were the hosts of the PHRF/J/88 Long Island Sound Championship. While Saturday was an overall non-starter for all fleets, Sunday at least produced two races to save the day for everyone. In the seven-boat J/88 one-design fleet, it was Mike Bruno’s WINGS that took the title with a 2-1 tally for 3 points total. Second was Bill Purdy’s WHIRLWIND with a 1-3 score for 4 points. Third was Cass leader Iris Vogel and her New York crew on DEVIATION, posting a 3-2 for 5 points. Rounding out the top five were Justin Scagnelli’s ALBONDINGAS in fourth and Ken & Drew Hall’s NEVERMORE in fifth position. Bright sunshine, steady breeze and flat seas greeted the 76 teams for the final day of racing at the 54th edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series (September 12-16), hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club. The race committee announced a 15-minute postponement on both the Alcatraz and Treasure Island race courses to allow the breeze to consolidate and—given the flood-tide cycle that the racers have been enjoying all week—the water to flatten-out prior to the day’s single long-form Bay Tour race. This traditional final-day course selection allowed all seven competing classes to finish this no-drop series directly in front of StFYC’s Race Deck, giving onshore spectators a fantastic view. J/88 sailors raced as a Rolex Big Boat Series’ one-design class for the first time this year and, in addition to dockside bragging rights, were competing for the Richard Rheem Perpetual Trophy, which honors former StFYC member Richard Rheem and his crew aboard Morning Star, Transpac record-breakers in 1949 and again in 1953. This year’s trophy and accompanying Rolex were presented to Gary Panariello and his Courageous (USA 77) teammates, who beat out Marc McMorris and his M Squared (USA 75) squad and Aya Yamanouchi and her Benny (USA 79169) team. Laura Weyler’s Hijinks collected two bullets Sunday to repeat as J/88 North American Champion. With Adam Burns, John Goller, Philip Hasl, Kevin Morgan and Kris Werner, the New York-based team kept all their scores in the top four in all 10 races. No scores were discarded for the series, part of the Verve Cup Offshore Regatta at Chicago Yacht Club. Hijinks bested the 13 other J/88s in six races, and although Ben Marden’s Banter grabbed the overall lead after day two, Weyler’s crew finished strong with three successive victories in the remaining contests Saturday and Sunday. Banter ended in runner-up position with 33 points, and Douglas Newhouse’s Yonder placed third with 46. Lake Michigan provided a gorgeous ending to the four-day event with sunny skies and winds around 8 knots. Following Weyler’s Hijinks in Sunday’s opening match were Mike Bruno’s Wings and Marden. In the final challenge, the top trio were Hijinks, Tim Finkle’s Seaweed and John & Jordan Leahey’s Dutch.
Some teams did more swimming than sailing at the J/88 North American Championship on Saturday, part of the Verve Cup Offshore Regatta at Chicago Yacht Club. After a long postponement, 14 J/88s finally embarked on one race, which was enough for Laura Weyler’s Hijinks to return to the top of the leaderboard. Hijinks’ bullet, paired with an 8 by day two leader Ben Marden’s Banter, leaves Weyler’s crew with a six-point advantage heading into the final day of the Championship on Sunday. A steady day of scores Friday made Ben Marden’s Banter the current frontrunner at the J/88 North American Championship in Chicago, IL. Four more races were recorded in a lumpy chop and winds between 6-10 knots for the 14 J/88s as part of the Verve Cup Offshore Regatta at Chicago Yacht Club. Banter advanced from a two-point deficit Thursday to hold a thin one-point advantage over Laura Weyler’s Hijinks after seven total races. No score will be discarded for the series. Marden racked up a 2,3,1,2 to bring his points to 16, compared to Weyler’s 17, after she counted a 4,1,2,4. Douglas Newhouse’s Yonder improved his overall position to third with 29 points. Class President Iris Vogel’s Deviation began the day by defeating Marden’s Banter and John & Jordan Leahey’s Dutch. Weyler’s Hijinks added her third win of the Championship in the next match, besting Newhouse and Marden. The familiar Marden and Weyler were first and second in Friday’s third race, trailed by Tim Finkle’s Seaweed. The Youngstown Yacht Club hosted the CanAm Challenge Regatta on western Lake Ontario over the last weekend in July. After 11 races, it was apparent who was going to become the 2018 J/88 Great Lakes Champion. By winning the first three races and closing the last day with a 1-1-2, Laura Weyler’s HIJINKS had control. Their record was six firsts and four seconds for just 14 points net. Second was Tim Finkle’s SEAWEED, winning the fight for the silver in the final race over Iris Vogel’s DEVIATION. It was another challenging 60nm offshore adventure for the Round the Island Race in the United Kingdom, hosted by the Island Sailing Club in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Over 1,000 boats began starting at 0630 hours. First off was the IRC Zero class, followed by over two-dozen more classes sailing across the Royal Yacht Squadron line. On Saturday, the high pressure system produced a light NE breeze to start, veering SE-SW during the afternoon depending where you were. At the Chicago NOOD on June 8-10, skipper Ben Marden praised his crew aboard the J/88 Banter for finding a good groove as they train for the J/88 North Americans in Chicago this summer. After a tricky first day, they made a radical decision that ultimately propelled them to four consecutive first-place finishes during the next two race days. "I was the only person who had the same job on the second day," Marden said. "Five people changed jobs, and we stuck with the new positions. We loosened everything up and were more aggressive with rig tune and light-air boathandling. This was a great test for the team, so we could take notes and come out of it with some new information on things we can improve upon." Cedar Point Yacht Club hosted its largest-ever One Design Regatta June 1-3, as a record 106 boats and 560 sailors competed in eight Classes. Fickle breezes and constantly changing seas created challenges on Saturday, as sailors worked through periods of dead calm followed by a thunderstorm that roared across Long Island Sound from the north. On Sunday, brisk winds across the circle courses southeast of Compo Beach made for more favorable conditions, and more races were completed. A mix of one-design Classes and handicap fleets embracing cruising boats, shorthanded sailors, and random leg racing was the format for the 2018 COLORS Regatta on June 2-3 in Chicago, IL with 107 teams on Lake Michigan. Eight J/88s competed in the Offshore Buoy Race Course 2 Racing One Design Division, getting off five races. The top three boats kept it tight all weekend, but it was Ben Marden’s Banter that came out on top with 11 points. Two points behind in second place was Andy Graff’s Exile and another two ticks back was Tim Wade’s Windsong. 66 teams from Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands raced in the 19th edition of the J/Boats festival of racing, held every year in United Kingdom. The 2018 Landsail Tyres J-Cup also incorporated the UK National championship for the J/88 Class. They produced a photo finish with Kirsty & David Apthorp's J-Dream winning on countback from Gavin Howe's Tigris. Tim Tolcher's Raging Bull was third, and Richard Cooper's Jongleur made the podium in two races to finish fourth. "We have been second a couple of times, and we really should have won last year, so it feels good to finally win it after knocking on the door," commented David Apthorp. "This regatta has been really good with close racing and pretty much the whole fleet at the same boat speed. Winning races comes down to tactics and boat handling. It would be nice to have more teams racing in the Class, but of all the Classes we have raced in, the J/88 is probably the most competitive, and consistency has been the key." J/88 Sailors: We are very excited to host the 2018 North American Championship. We hope you will consider traveling to Lake Michigan and Chicago for what should be the largest fleet of J/88s to date. Below is some information that may help you plan for the regatta. Please contact either of us if you have any questions about the event or location.
Location: Chicago Yacht Club has two locations - CYC-Belmont Harbor and CYC-Monroe Harbor. North Americans will occur during a larger regatta: the Offshore Verve. The J/88s will be based out of Belmont Harbor as it offers launch facilities, trailer parking and will be racing on a “Championship Circle” near the harbor.
CYC Monroe is located along the lake adjacent to downtown in Monroe Harbor. Belmont Harbor is located 4 miles north of Monroe in the Lakeview neighborhood. Both locations are located in close proximity to tourist attractions and hotels. There will be a shuttle running continuously between CYC Monroe & CYC Belmont. Uber/lift is also convenient as it’s a quick trip between the clubs.
There are some hotels located near Belmont in Lakeview, but it is unlikely that you would be close enough to walk to the club and the selection is more limited. There are numerous hotels (with rooms available online) located within walking distance of CYC-Monroe downtown. River North would be another desirable location. It is in between the two clubs (although not walkable) and near Michigan Ave. and many restaurants.
Option 1: Belmont Harbor at Regatta Site. This is free and recommended. There is a 5-ton crane for use with a single-point lift. There will be a few single-point harnesses on site to use if you do not have your own. The 5-ton crane should not be used for mast stepping. For mast step, you may either use the mast crane after launching at the yacht club dock or a gin-pole in the parking lot before launch. On Tuesday & Wednesday, we will have volunteers to help with both the launch crane and the mast crane.
Option 2: There are professional boatyards available 15 miles south, near the Indiana border that offer full service rigging, launching, storage and delivery. (We are working on a package with the boat yard if anyone is interested, please let us know)
Trailer Parking During Regatta: available at Belmont Harbor, included in the regatta entry fee.
Storage before and after regatta: You may have your boat and/or trailer stored in the Belmont Harbor parking lot after the CanAm regatta (July 30th) and leave it for up to one week after NAs.
Docking during regatta: There will be docking included with the regatta on U-Dock, the dock closest to CYC-Belmont. See map on next page.
Vehicle parking: at Belmont during race days will be available directly on site at a pay lot. We will investigate if this can be made free to the regatta, but no promises.

Other Social Events: There will be a regatta-wide party at CYC-Monroe, Friday and Saturday after racing. Awards will be at CYC-Monroe on Sunday after racing.
On towing a J/88 into Chicago Belmont Harbor:
1. You need to plan your route ahead of time and be careful not to take wrong turns towards low bridges in traffic. Many of the older viaducts within the city streets are too low.
2. It is against the law to drive with a trailer on Lake Shore Drive.
3. This route is one that we have used. It may not be the only way, but it works well:
1. From points South and East, take I-90/94 towards downtown Chicago. You may take either the I-90 Tollway (Skyway) for a fee or the I-94 free route from Indiana.
2. As you approach downtown, follow signs towards Wisconsin. Avoid express lanes.
3. North of downtown, you will take exit 48A for Armitage Ave.
4. At the bottom of the exit ramp, you will need to make a right hand turn of about 110-degrees under a bridge. Leave yourself room to make a wide turn, probably from a half lane to the left of the right turn lane.
5. After crossing under this bridge, you will turn left onto Ashland Ave within 400 ft.
6. Take Ashland Ave. North to Belmont Ave. Turn Right on Belmont.
7. Take Belmont East all the way to the lake. You will pass underneath Lake Shore Drive just before the harbor. This bridge is arch-shaped. Stay near the left side of the right-hand land and make a right turn into the harbor drive. There is a “No Right Turn” sign telling you not to turn the wrong way into the off-ramp of Lake Shore Dr. You will turn right just past the off-ramp from Lake Shore Dr. and follow south to the harbor parking lot entrance.
The American Yacht Club Spring Series continued for the final weekend of racing on May 5-6. Spring sailing resumed as eight separate fleets competed on the Long Island Sound. On Saturday, sailors aimed to pick up where they had left off the prior weekend; however, the weather had other plans. With very little wind on both courses, sailors were forced to wait for breeze throughout the day. In total, the East Course was only able to get one race in. The South Course managed to get two races in by shortening the last race. After racing, sailors were treated to a special presentation in the American Yacht Club ballroom by Tucker Thompson, who was the official host of the 35th America’s Cup. Tucker gave a unique behind the scenes look at the competition for the 35th America's Cup held in Bermuda. He also gave the attendees a sneak peek at the 36th America's Cup in New Zealand. On a day that also celebrated Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby, it's safe to say Saturday had plenty of fun for sailors both on and off the water. Sunday morning brought overcast skies as competitors returned to AYC for the final day of racing. In the J/88 division, Escape owned by Elizabeth and Matt Barry finished first, with Wings skippered by Past Commodore Mike Bruno finishing second. The Warsash Sailing Club’s annual Helly Hansen Spring Series produced no surprises at the end of six weekends of racing. The Black Group had two races on Sunday starting near Goodall Roofing on the tail of the Bramble bank. The breeze was 8-15 knots NNE, and two triangle sausage type races were set, using fixed and laid marks, starting with beats toward laid marks near the mainland shore off Lee-on-Solent, and forays across the main tide to the Ryde middle bank. A longer course set for the second race as the breeze increased. It was close racing for the J/88s with TIGRIS (Gavin Howe) and J-DREAM (David & Kirsty Apthorp) each getting a first and second on Sunday. This also meant that over the series they were equal on points and final positions. They were separated on countback with J-DREAM winning from TIGRIS, with JONGLEUR (Richard Cooper) third. Success in the second day of racing in the Helly Hansen Warsash Spring Series on April 15 went to those skippers who played the strong tides in the Solent and managed to stay in breeze. Having lost two Sundays of racing due to the weather, the race committee was keen to get racing going. Despite the breeze not reaching the numbers forecast, it managed to run two races for the Black Group and the usual three races for White Group. Black Group's two starts were near Robin Culpan buoy in the Solent, with courses running toward East Bramble and Goodall Roofing; upwind against the building tide, and downwind with it. Most boats chose to stay offshore in the steadier breeze rather than seeking less tide inshore. Winning both races in the J/88 fleet was Richard Cooper’s JONGLEUR to take the class lead with 4 points. Posting two seconds to hold on to second place was Gavin Howe’s TIGRIS with 5 points. Skipper Tim Finkle led Seaweed to the win in the J/88 fleet at Charleston Race Week, getting the gun in four of eight races in posting a low score of 16 points. It was tightly bunched behind Seaweed with four boats finishing with either 24 or 25 points (Iris Vogel, Rob Ruhlman and Mike Bruno). "We had a really good team that put a lot of effort into preparation and that paid off," said Finkle, a J/Boat dealer in Buffalo who credited tactician Kris Werner for repeatedly putting the boat in good spots. "We got a bunch of good starts, which was huge because you had to get to one side of the course quickly because the current was such a huge factor." The St. Francis Yacht Club held its annual J/Fest April 7-9 with rain, low clouds, wind and sun. The J/88 fleet saw Marc McMorris’ crew on M-SQUARED from San Diego YC overcome all the "local knowledge" teams to win counting just firsts and seconds in the scoreline, finishing with 7 points total. Counting just seconds and thirds and taking second overall with a dozen points was Paul Recktenwald’s LAZY DAWG from Stamford YC. Third was top St. Francis YC team COURAGEOUS, skippered by Donald Payan. Rounding out the top five was Aya Yamanouchi’s BENNY in fourth and Steve Gordon’s INCONCEIVABLE fifth. What a difference a week makes - the first weekend of the series, all racing was cancelled as strong winds and a blanket of snow covered the south of England, but Sunday light winds and relatively balmy temperatures were the order of the day. Challenge number one for the race committee came when the primary Black Group committee boat broke down and couldn't be enticed into starting. So the team had to squeeze onto the club’s small committee boat Lobster. Challenge number two for both race committees was setting start lines and courses in the light Northerly air, with wind speeds between 5 to 8 knots. After two days of racing on Tampa Bay from February 16-17, light weather persisted Sunday to close the 2018 Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design Regatta in St. Petersburg, FL with a day ashore. In the six-boat J/88 one-design fleet, Al Minella on Albóndigas secured five bullets in seven races to take the win with 11 points. The inaugural J/Fest St. Pete Regatta took place January 19-21 on Tampa Bay. Host St. Petersburg Yacht Club and its Race Committee, PRO and volunteers made a valiant effort to get in as many races as they could considering the cards they had been dealt—essentially no, or very little, wind for all three days. It warm up quickly all three days of sailing, so the sunshine and warm 70 degree days were a welcome reprieve for many teams who had come south to Florida. The J/88s had a real battle going by the end of the second day for the title of Midwinter Champion. The top two boats were tied on points with a 1-2 for each team. Mike Bruno’s WINGS from New York and Long Island Sound were even with Andy Graff’s EXILE from Chicago and Lake Michigan. Both were experienced in light air sailing on those two bodies of water. With just one race to go, the last race was won by Iris Vogel’s DEVIATION to secure third place on the podium. However, Graff’s EXILE crew misjudged the adverse current and got hung up on the anchorline of the RC boat at the start; as a result they scored a fourth so held on to second place for the regatta. Winning the regatta and crowned as J/88 Midwinter Champion with a 1-2-2 scoreline for 5 points was Bruno’s crew on WINGS. Competitors for the eighth weekend of the Hamble Winter Series enjoyed more good racing with the Hamble River Sailing Club, supported by OneSails, with a decent 12-17 knot breeze and partly cloudy, but chilly weather. The fleets started with a short windward leg and were then tested with a mixture of downwind, reaching and upwind sailing. Competitors for the fifth weekend of the Hamble Winter Series enjoyed a fantastic day of racing with the Hamble River Sailing Club, supported by OneSails. With bright sunshine and 15-20 knots of wind over tide, Principal Race Officer Stuart Childerley and his team delivered a superb course with one long race for all classes. In the J/88 fleet, Avia Willment is having an outstanding debut season, scoring a fifth bullet for the series, but only just. The fifth weekend of sailing had nearly a full-blown gale all weekend long. The remnants of a Caribbean hurricane decided to take a right turn into the North Atlantic Ocean and headed right for Scotland, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The storm thrashed the western coasts of the islands with 60-80 knot winds. As a result, Saturday’s racing was canceled on the Solent due to sustained winds of 25-30 knots gusting to 45+ knots. Then, on Sunday the winds moderated enough for the IRC classes and the J/88s to go racing in something less than 25 knots of wind. In the HWS J/88 Class, Avia Willment’s crew on GBR 2688R piled on yet another bullet to their tally, further strengthening their firm grip at the top of the class with just 6 points net. Sitting seven points back is Gavin Howe’s TIGRIS with 13 points net, followed by Richard Cooper’s JONGLEUR with 16 points net, then David & Kirsty Apthorp’s J-DREAM with 18 points. The 39th annual Manhasset Fall Series took place October 14, 15 and 21. The event was blessed with a variety of conditions over the two weekends, from near gales one day, to sunny and not much winds another day. The Manhasset YC Race Committee crew and volunteers did a wonderful job to knock-out a six-race series for most of the classes. In the J/88s, Iris Vogel guided her DEVIATION crew to a win in the PHRF 2 class, taking three bullets and three deuces to win class. Third place went to another J/88, Peter Chirlian’s ONE TOO MANY. The first day of the Hamble One Design Championship began with wind in the low 20s, and gusts of up to 30 knots. The Hamble River Sailing Club race committee team headed out to Jonathan Jansen, and after a short AP, the wind began to ease to around 16 knots, and the race team delivered a full schedule of four windward-leeward races in short order. The conditions provided spectacular autumn racing for the sportsboat classes, with fast and thrilling downwind surfing conditions. By contrast, the second day produced light winds of about four knots, which slowly built allowing one race for competitors. However, after the first race of the day, the wind died and sadly did not rebuild. The 36th edition of the Hamble Winter Series kicked off on September 30 and included the inaugural IRC Spinlock Autumn Championship organized by the Hamble River Sailing Club. Five races were held for all classes competing in the IRC Spinlock Autumn Championship, and for those competing in the Hamble Winter Series, two races were completed on October 1. A wide variety of yachts racing under IRC and in one-designs enjoyed a perfect southerly wind of 15 knots on Saturday with a 16-18 knot southwesterly intensifying condition on Sunday. For the Spinlock IRC Autumn Championship, Ian Smyth's team is winning the J/88 fleet, with Kirsty & David Apthorp’s J/DREAM in second and Richard Cooper’s JONGLEUR in third place. The 2017 Fall Series Regatta ended October 1 at American Yacht Club in splendid fashion. This Saturday and Sunday concluded the latter half of the Fall Series Regatta which occurred over the course of two weekends. Saturday racing was met with an anticipated Fall feel as temperatures hovered below 60 degrees with oscillating winds ranging from 15-20 knots. The higher than forecasted breeze velocities created some epic sailing conditions and top speed records for certain boats. Towards the end of Saturday, several boats set personal speed records both upwind and downwind. Eight8 classes of boats embraced the chilly weather to compete on the Long Island Sound. The Bi-State and the Tri-State is a multi-leg offshore race held over Labor Day Weekend on the southern parts of Lake Michigan. Chicago to St. Joseph, MI is the first leg of the race. More than 100 boats departed Friday evening for a fast sprint of 50.5 NM across the lake, most boats finishing early Saturday morning. For most, Saturday was a day of rest in St. Joseph with the Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament and live entertainment at the St. Joseph River YC. Then, on Sunday morning, racers chose whether to continue to Michigan City, IN as part of the traditional Tri-State or head back to Chicago for the Bi-State leg of the race. Most chose the latter based on the forecasted light winds down the Michigan shoreline. The 17-boat PHRF 4 handicap class had a quartet of J/88s dueling for honors. Amongst the J/88s, taking first was EXILE (Andy Graff) with a 2-1 for 3 points. Second was SLOT MACHINE (Boyd Jarrell) with a 4-3 for 7 points, winning the tie-breaker based on "who-beat-who-last" over RAMBLER (Ben Wilson) with a 3-4 for 7 points. The Dartmouth Regatta is a great way to end the summer sailing season along the south coast of the United Kingdom. Set in the West Country, the regatta forms part of a larger event that includes rowing championships and has many onshore attractions. The weather was perfect for rowing and beach activities, but not so good for sailing. For example, 2/3 of day 2 and all of day 3 were lost to lack of wind. Race day 1 saw three races sailed in 8-15 knots, day 2 just one race in 7-10 knots. The final day saw two races completed by 1330 in a 6-11 knot breeze. J/DREAM prevailed, reversing the Nationals result with EAT SLEEP J REPEAT in the J/88 battle.
The last day of the Landsail Tyres J-Cup (hosted by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club, Torquay, UK, August 17-19) was blessed with champagne conditions in beautiful Tor Bay. A southwesterly breeze oscillated 20 degrees left and right during the day, and with tight racing in one design fleets, and closely matched handicap classes, getting the wrong side of a shift proved costly. The Royal Torbay Yacht Club produced two well managed windward leeward courses, as the club has done for the entire event, and two races were held for all six classes. The intensity of racing in the J/88 fleet was exemplified by the fact that the winner only won a single race out of eight starts. Every mark rounding and wind shift became important with teams swapping places on many occasions. Richard Cooper's Jongleur and Tim Tolcher's Rajing Bull both made the podium during the regatta, and 2016 National Champion, Gavin Howe's Tigris, finished in style, winning the last race. However, two teams battled for three days to take the prize. David & Kirsty Apthorp's J-Dream, scored three bullets over three days of top class racing, but victory went to the new J/88 UK Open National Champion: Paul Ward's Eat, Sleep, J, Repeat. "Awesome racing, it was really really close. The J/88 is a fast cool boat, and lots of great people race in the Class, who enjoy a drink and a get together after racing," explained Ward. "We were just in front when we started the last race, and it was very quiet on board...game face on. In the pre-start, J-Dream came and had a little play, and we managed to defend that, and sailed our own race. This year, the same team has sailed together for the whole of Cowes Week, and the whole of this regatta, and we really won this (Saturday), when the boat handling in tough conditions was spot on." The Cowes Combined Clubs had another amazing week of sailing during LENDY Cowes Week Regatta sailed from July 29 to August 5 on the Solent. The winner of the J/88 fleet was clearly David & Kirsty Apthorp’s J-DREAM, winning five of the six races sailed. Taking second was Paul Ward’s EAT SLEEP J REPEAT, and fourth was SABRIEL JR. Of the nine races at the J/88 North American Championship (part of the CanAm Challenge at Youngstown Yacht Club in New York), Laura Weyler’s Hijinks won five of them. Their performance dominated the 13-boat fleet, allowing the local team to sit out the final meeting. Owner Weyler was joined on board by Adam Burns (helm), Pete Doyle (bow), John Goller (headsail trimmer), Kevin Morgan (strategist) and Kris Werner (tactician). Tim Finkle’s Seaweed came on strong to take the silver position with 23 points. Doug Newhouse’s Yonder tied on points with Iris Vogel’s Deviation at 29 for third and fourth, respectively. Weyler bought her J/88 about a year and a half ago, and was especially satisfied to win this Championship on her home turf. When asked who on her team she’d like to recognize, she said, "If I were Belichick, I’d have to say it’s Brady. Adam was flawless, as well as the rest of the crew!" The J/88 Class was formed earlier this year, and Weyler thanked Iris Vogel, the first Class President, for "leading this Class into the future. It’s going to be a growing Class. The level of competition will continually attract people to buy these boats." Winds on Lake Ontario were around 5-7 knots on Sunday, when Hijinks won the first two races, giving them a scoreline of 1,1,3,1,5,2,1,1. After two more races at the J/88 North American Championship (part of the CanAm Challenge at Youngstown Yacht Club in New York), Laura Weyler’s Hijinks maintained her place atop the leaderboard, now holding an eight-point advantage heading into the final races on Sunday. With Adam Burns at the helm, Hijinks lodged its lowest finish thus far—a fifth—in race five, but was able to discard the score as their throw-out after race six. A second in that contest leaves Hijinks with 8 net points in six races. Iris Vogel’s Deviation earned a 2,3 on Saturday to move into second place at 16 net points. Tim Finkle’s Seaweed and Doug Newhouse’s Yonder are tied just one notch back. Saturday began with breeze at 10-12 knots and lumpy seas, as Newhouse’s Yonder triumphed over Vogel’s Deviation and James Egloff’s Touch 2 Play. The Race Committee had to shorten the course in the next race as winds decreased. Finkle’s Seaweed earned the win, trailed by Weyler and Vogel. The 13 J/88s stayed on the water hoping for the breeze to return, but an additional race was not able to be completed. Lake Champlain in northern Vermont forms the border between upper New York state and state of Vermont. One of the bigger races on the Lake is the annual Lake Champlain Race - an overnight PHRF race that allows crew to race through the night usually finishing the next morning. Held annually since 1956, the 60-mile race challenges crews in unique ways. The light winds of midsummer require constant attention in order to keep pace with the fleet. Starting at sunset, the wind slows down and brings along the need for good night vision and the hope for a full moon or many stars. Sunrise is welcome and offers the first glimpse of where the rest of the fleet has settled. The race counts towards the Lake Champlain Championship Series, and all the series’ contenders turnout. Thirteen J/88s took to the waters of Lake Ontario on Friday, where 15-20 knots of breeze allowed four wavy races at the J/88 North American Championship, part of the CanAm Challenge at Youngstown Yacht Club in New York. Laura Weyler’s Hijinks has collected a hefty advantage with scores of 1,1,3,1 for 6 points. Mike Bruno’s Wings holds the second spot with 15 points. Two boats are tied on points at 17 for third and fourth, respectively: James Egloff’s Touch 2 Play and Iris Vogel’s Deviation. Hijinks, with local Adam Burns at the helm, took bullets in the first two meetings, followed by Doug Newhouse’s Yonder and Egloff in race one, and by Tim Finkle’s Seaweed and Bruno in race two. Bruno then won the third contest, ahead of Egloff and Weyler. Vogel and Doug McKeige’s Jazz watched Hijinks notch its third victory of the day in Friday’s final duel. Racing continues through Sunday. The Joseph Perrier July Regatta is the third in the Royal Southern Yacht Club Summer Series, featuring two days of racing in the Solent from 22-23 July. Over 100 yachts have competed in the series so far, enjoying well organized racing and superb waterside facilities, on the banks of the Hamble River. Six races were held for most classes, in a variety of conditions, on windward leeward courses, and round the cans races. Wind conditions were in the high teens gusting up to 25 knots, just within spinnaker range and making for exciting racing. This year’s 109th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac will go down in the history books as one of the toughest races ever. Just 200 of the 297 starters completed the 289.4 nm course. A frontal passage hit the fleet at midnight on Saturday, just hours into the race, producing a rare "dry front" that looked menacing as it came over the water but had no rain over Lake Michigan. As the front passed over the fleet, a blast front of 35-50 knot winds flew across the water. Shortly thereafter, the front passed by, pulling behind it a far stronger northerly breeze than forecast, so the fleet settled into a 20+ hour beat to windward in 15-30 knot winds from the NNE and punching into a classic 6-10 ft Lake Michigan chop. The winds rapidly shut down between the Manitou Island Straits and the open waters headed to Grey’s Reef. In the Section 8 class of 28-33 footers, winning class was Tim Wade’s J/88 WINDSONG with crew of Todd Anderson, Andy Camarda, Kristin Olson, Tripp Wade and Andrew Waters. Leading the J/88 sweep with their colleagues was Ben & Amanda Wilson’s J/88 RAMBLER crew that consisted of Mark Ewing, Peter Fray, Rj Mills, Ed Montano and Jim Nachtman. This year’s annual Round the Island Race, organized by the Island Sailing Club, was one of the faster circumnavigations of the 53.2nm circuit around the Isle of Wight. It attracted 1,342 entries comprising about 14,000 sailors. The J/88s rounded the island in just under eight hours. The top two boats finished virtually overlapped, with JONGLEUR (Richard Cooper) getting the gun at 7:43:29, just four seconds better than TIGRIS (Gavin Howe). Just over 23 minutes behind was JUMUNU FIVE (Alistair Ray) taking the bronze. After five days of hard racing at Block Island Race Week, on Friday, June 23, there were 16 ecstatic winners and an equal number of disappointed runners-up. Jazz turned in a dominant performance in J/88 class, winning seven of eight races in posting a low score of 8 points. It was also the first Block Island Race Week win for skipper Douglas McKeige of Mamaroneck, New York. "All I can say is the boat was going really, really well. We just had pace and could lift off the fleet," McKeige said. "I didn’t expect to do quite this well, but I had a great team here with me this week. They hike hard and are constantly working to get the most out of the boat." In the J/88 Class:

The Royal Southern Yacht Club's Summer Series Harken June Regatta in Hamble, UK was blessed with spectacular conditions for the final day of action. The southwesterly wind piped up from 15 to 20 knots by the end of the day, and with wind over tide, a lumpy sea state tested the resolve of well over 300 hundred sailors taking part. In the J/88 Class, David & Kirsty Apthorp’s J-DREAM scored a win in the last race of the regatta to secure the class win from Dirk & Dianne van Beek's SABRIEL Jr. Richard Cooper's JONGLEUR won Race 4 and finished the regatta third in class. The annual regatta that marks the start of the offshore sailing season in Chicago on Lake Michigan is Columbia Yacht Club’s Skyway Yacht Works Colors Regatta. Depending on weather and fleets, most boats sailed three to four races over the weekend in the challenging weather conditions. In the PHRF Offshore distance racing scenario, the J/88s did quite well. The Cedar Point One Design Regatta was hosted by Cedar Point Yacht Club the weekend of June 3-4. The racing was held on Long Island Sound southeast of Cedar Point. Seventy eight boats sailed the regatta on two circle courses. On Saturday, a squall blew through both courses to make things interesting for the first day of racing. Sunday was a different day, one light air race was enough to solidify some champions, but for some, the ripping tidal current on Long Island Sound was enough to see some lead changes. In the nine-boat J/88 fleet, six races were completed with Elizabeth Barry’s Escape earning the victory with 10 points, just one ahead of second place Iris Vogel on Deviation. The 72nd edition of the Block Island Race on May 26 off of Stamford, CT was 186nm with 66 entrants. The breeze at the first start was a shifty 4 knots, but by the third start, it settled into a stiff northwesterly of 15 knots with significantly higher gusts. Most of the fleet popped their kites right at the start, with the majority paralleling the CT coast for the first 15-20 miles. A number of forecasts predicted a big wind hole in the middle of L.I. Sound in the Bridgeport-to-New Haven area, and soon the leading boats in the fleet began to see the first signs of its unwelcome appearance. The quandary was which side of the Sound would be better for getting around the hole–the CT shore, or the Long Island shore. Some gybed toward the LI shore, and others decided to stay the course along the CT side. Cutting across the Sound carried an additional risk of not making it to the other shore before the wind shut down. The key– in hindsight– was being close to either shore: it mattered less which shore you were on, as long as you weren’t out toward the middle. The hole, however, didn’t last nearly as long as some of the forecasts had predicted, and the fleet made good progress toward buoy 1BI off the north end of Block Island, with most flying spinnakers all the way to, and then around, the island. As they passed the south side of the island, the fleet was faced with a NW breeze and back toward Long Island Sound. The forecasts indicated a good chance the wind would shift toward the SE, with a light and fluky transition period. After the fleet leaders re-entered the Sound (most through Plum Gut), the wind from the NW faded to a period of calm before the southerly wind began to fill in, but somewhat erratically. Eventually, the southerly took precedence, and by Saturday afternoon (May 27), the lead competitors began to reappear on the Stamford horizon. The 62nd Annual Edlu Distance Race attracted 59 entrants for what has long been a classic tune-up race for the around Block Island Race and Block Island Race Week. Hosted by Larchmont Yacht Club (Larchmont, NY) on May 13, spinnaker fleets were on a 32.2nm course and non-spinnaker on a 19.6nm course, with racing followed by a classic party to make it one of the must-do events on western Long Island Sound. Seventy boats competed over the course of two weekends in the 38th Annual American Yacht Club Spring Series Regatta. This year was no disappointment as the final weekend brought breezes and sunny skies to challenge racers as they prepare their boats and crew for another sailing season in the Northeast. The Spring Series saw eight classes complete 10 and 11 races on the East and South courses respectively, over the two-weekend event. Race days were followed by cocktails and food on the picturesque lawn of the American Yacht Club overlooking the course. In the competitive J/88 fleet, Iris Vogel and Deviation won the event with 23 points, while only one point separated second place Nevermore, third place Wings, and fourth place Escape. After five weeks of racing in the Helly Hansen Warsash Spring Series, the final day's races on April 23 had to be abandoned due to a lack of wind. Competitors headed out for their start lines in fog with very little wind and little visibility, less than 1/2 mile. The White and Black Group Committees announced a half hour postponement and whilst the fog slowly lifted, revealing a beautiful sunny spring morning, the wind remained elusive. This proved to be the first of several postponements. With less than four knots of wind, both committees and all the competing yachts waited for breeze through the morning. Midday saw the prospects for a sea breeze filling start to look promising, with cloud bubbling up over the Isle of Wight and on the mainland. White Group Race Officer Peter Knight moved the committee boat further inshore in the hopes of picking up some temperature increased airs, but it was not to be, and eventually both committees abandoned racing and sent the fleets in at around 13:00. The final overall positions in the Helly Hansen Warsash Springs are, therefore, the results from the previous weekend’s sailing. David & Kirsty Apthorp’s crew on their J/88 J-DREAM won three of the last four races to climb on to the podium. This was their first Warsash Series win in the J/88 class. Second was determined on a tie-breaker at 13 points each, with Gavin Howe’s TIGRIS securing second with more firsts over Dirk & Dianne Van Beek’s SABRIEL JR. Charleston is known for its reliable spring seabreeze, but the Holy City’s coast outdid itself this year during the 22nd edition of Sperry Charleston Race Week. It wasn’t just the three race days either; from the first team’s arrival for practice more than a week earlier until the lengthy awards ceremony on Sunday night, reliable southerly winds buffeted the region, ensuring maximum racing, maximum action, and maximum enjoyment for the nearly 2,000 sailors, shore crew, staff, and volunteers that comprise this largest event of its kind in the Americas. Another day of varied racing conditions on the fifth weekend of the Helly Hansen Warsash Spring Series saw a light and hazy day for crews, but certainly not lazy. A sunny spring day, 10 knots of SE breeze, swinging right to SW and increasing a couple of knots was the forecast, and as the committee boats arrived on station SE with up to 10 knots of breeze was what they found. The Black Group started near Hillhead with a southeasterly breeze that started at 5-6 knots, building at times to 10 knots. For the various classes, a 5 to 8nm race was set with a final beat to QXI international and a fetch to the finish at Deloitte Sailing Club buoy. For the majority of the fleets this worked well, but as the wind died, some boats in IRC1 and IRC2 and the J/88 fleet, didn't get around QXI against the tide and couldn't make the time limit. Some fleets were stranded between East Knoll and QXI international and a few boats ventured south of the Bramble bank, either looking for breeze or carried down there by the tide, and eventually breaths of wind started easing in from the southwest. Two fleets together with some J/88s then parked up in a long line abreast wafting towards the mark, then drifting back in the hot sunshine, until the new southwesterly breeze got tired of this game and suddenly just filled in - this left the fleets all trying to round the mark almost simultaneously, but due to courtesy and common sense there appeared to be no collisions, and after a short beat to the finish the committee boat had the task of recording every finisher in a two minute window. With the breeze now filled in, the Black Group committee boat moved to a new position near Jonathan Janssen buoy, and in the limited space and time available set a short windward leeward course as the breeze freshened to around 12 knots, and all classes enjoyed a short but sparkling final race. The J/88s had TIGRIS (Gavin Howe) win the first race with J-DREAM (David and Kirsty Apthorp) second, and SABRIEL JR (Dirk and Dianne van Beek) third. In the second race J-DREAM got to the front with SABRIEL JR second and EAT SLEEP J REPEAT (Paul Ward) in third. Overall J-DREAM leads from TIGRIS and SABRIEL JR. The J/88 fleet is seeing a bit of stratification amongst the fleet. As a result, the leader is David & Kirsty Apthorp’s J-DREAM with all five firsts. Taking second is Paul Ward’s EAT SLEEP J REPEAT with all seconds. And, in third is Tim Tolcher’s RAGING BULL with all thirds. For the J/88 series, there is no question that David & Kirsty Apthorp’s J-DREAM with a 4-3-1-1-2-1 for 8 points has a good lead. Race Officer Peter Knight summed up day four of the Helly Hansen Warsash Spring Series as "a testing day for competitors and committee boats alike!" It was set to be a challenging day on the Solent; a sunny spring day, but with a forecast of 5-10 knots of breeze dropping towards lunchtime and tides at about 95% of full springs. Black Group classes started near East Knoll, with the wind initially about 10 knots NNE and dropping to 5 or 6 knots by midday. Courses set were a beat to Coronation, followed by round the cans courses shortened at East Bramble as the wind faded. IRC1 and IRC2 did about 12 miles on their shortened course. As the breeze dropped, cross-tide runs and spinnaker reaches taxed tacticians as the puffs and lulls made calculating lay lines difficult, and noticeably at East Knoll some boats had a slog to get back to the mark against the flood tide, after getting too far east. The course for the IRC1 and IRC2 classes was put at risk when a laid inflatable Spring Series mark was removed by "a third party," as Peter Bateson, Series Chairman politely explained. "Fortunately, the Race Committee discovered this in the nick of time and substituted a rib with an ‘M22’ flag. The five leading boats had to sail a few extra yards, but it appears that the order of results was fortunately unaffected." The J/88s had an individual recall, but all boats restarted correctly, and the finishing order was J-DREAM (David and Kirsty Apthorp) first, with SABRIEL JR (Dirk& Dianne van Beek) in second place, and EAT SLEEP J REPEAT (Paul Ward) in third. For many, it was "chilled champagne" sailing on day three of the Helly Hansen Warsash Spring Series. The series is at its midpoint, and the overall results are beginning to take shape as the front-runners and riders start to become apparent. The third Sunday of the Series was more like a classic Spring Series day; cold with sunshine and reasonable winds from the east. The Black Group start line was near E Knoll with the first beat set to a removable buoy on the mainland shore. True wind was around 18 knots, varying from 14 to 21, but with relatively flat water. On the combined IRC1 and 2 starts, eagerness prevailed as boats clustered up on the committee boat end of the line, and the individual recall flag was displayed - boats peeled off and restarted. The J/88s, having watched the IRC 1 & 2 class start, seemed more reluctant to push the line at the gun and held back to complete a clean start, and enjoyed close racing round the course. J-DREAM (David and Kirsty Apthorp) won by 11 seconds from TIGRIS (Gavin Howe) with SABRIEL JR (Dirk and Dianne van Beek) in third place. This puts TIGRIS (Gavin Howe) in the first overall placing on a tie-breaker with J-DREAM (David and Kirsty Apthorp) second overall. Then, just one point back in third is JONGLEUR (Richard Cooper), one point still further down is the Van Beek’s SABRIEL JR, with Paul Heys & P Tait’s JENGA rounding out the top five with 16 points. For Race 2 of the Helly Hansen Warsash Spring Series, the forecast for the Solent was SW 20 knots gusting 30 knots, and when the RC committee boats arrived on station, the wind was varying around 20 knots. During the morning, however, the wind increased to 25 knots with gusts of 30 knots. So, after one successful race, the decision was taken to send the White Group back in. The sea was lumpy, making the foul tide beats a struggle to keep the boats in the groove. In the J/88 one-design class, it was TIGRIS (Gavin Howe) winning for the day with JONGLEUR (Richard Cooper) second and J-DREAM (David and Kirsty Apthorp) in third. As a result, JONGLEUR leads the series with TIGRIS second and J-DREAM tied with Dirk & Dianne van Beek’s SABRIEL JR at 7 points each. Last year, the first race of the Helly Hansen Warsash Spring Series took place in unseasonably glorious sunshine, but this year on March 12, entrants were faced with drizzle, mist and light winds. With light fair tide beats and foul tide runs, the latter were always going to a challenge, and both the White and Black Groups boats found that avoiding holes downwind was the main priority of the day. It was a challenging day also for line and course setting for the committee boats. The winds reported on Bramblenet were 7-10 knots Southwest, but Dock Heads was reporting 7-10 knots Northwest. In the end, Northwest predominated, but 10 knots was rarely if ever seen. On the White Group, Race 2 had to be abandoned when the wind switched through 90 degrees or more and dropped below 3 knots. However, another two races were completed, and as Race Officer Peter Knight noted, the same boats were up at the front. The first event of the 2017 Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta wrapped in St. Petersburg on February 19. The regatta brings national and international talent to compete against local sailors on their home waters. The competition was tight this year, with many ties across the 154-boat regatta. Australia’s southern-most J/88 has been competing in the Combined Clubs Long Race series out of Hobart, Tasmania, and has recently claimed its first corrected time victory against much larger boats. The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, the Derwent Sailing Squadron and the Bellerive Yacht Club conduct the long race series jointly, with races typically being 30-50 nautical miles in length. There are 28 yachts competing in the mixed fleet, including a Reichel Pugh 66, Marten 49 and Sydney 47. New J/88 owners Peter and Karen Davis have raced JIYUU in the first three races of the season, and have scored results of 9,3 and 1 on AMS corrected time. The first race down the Dentrecasteaux Channel was a real test for their first outing, with winds reaching 50 knots on the beat back up the river. “We saw 18 knots on the speedo whilst running down the river under A2,” said Peter, “but unfortunately broached just before the leeward mark which took the edge off the day.” The second race was a more manageable affair, and a building sea breeze saw the J/88 run up the river under (new) A2 to catch a number of larger boats. The third race was the highlight, with a lot of spinnaker work, and a delightful sunny day with light winds. “We found the J/88 kept moving in the lighter breezes, and accelerated rapidly under kite when the breeze came in,” said Peter. The J/88 finished 12th on line honors, and first overall on corrected time.
The 30th anniversary Quantum Key West Race Week saw the seven racing classes complete races as scheduled. The week started with a windy and wavy southeasterly that faded over the course of four days before swinging around to a light southerly for Friday's conclusion. Many sailors felt the conditions were "typical of Key West Race Week," and they complemented the race committee's judgment. Class winner Laura Weyler's (Williamsville, NY) Hijinks in the J/88 Class had such a large lead that she didn't have to race Friday. Two races were held Thursday at Key West Race Week in light winds between 6-9 knots from the southeast. These were held after a harbor postponement that was signaled to allow the light northeasterly wind to shift around to the forecasted southeasterly. Laura Weyler's (Williamsville, NY) Hijinks holds an 11-point lead in the J/88 fleet. With only one race left to sail, they can’t be overtaken. Racing concludes Friday. Day 3 at the 30th anniversary Quantum Key West Race Week (Mount Gay Rum Day) saw a softening of the breeze on the racecourse. After a windy and wavy start to the regatta, Wednesday's conditions were far more manageable, as the wind ranged anywhere from a high of 10-13 knots before dying away to 7-9. The sea state, while calmer than the first two days, was still lumpy. In the J/88 fleet, Laura Weyler's (Williamsville, NY) Hijinks won the first two races to extended its winning streak to four races, but then finished sixth in Race 7. Still, Hijinks leads with 13 points and is 10 points ahead of Ryan Ruhlman's (Bratenahl, OH) Spaceman Spiff. Racing continues through Friday. To the delight of the more than 600 sailors competing in the 30th anniversary Quantum Key West Race Week, day two's racing nearly mirrored day one's memorable conditions. ‘Lewmar Day’ offered more stellar racing in 15-20 knot winds amid sunny skies and warm air temperatures. "It was another challenging, windy day, but these are the conditions you expect down here," said Kris Werner (Rochester, NY), tactician for Laura Weyler's (Williamsville, NY) J/88 Hijinks. "We made the comment sailing in both days to take a look around: it's just beautiful here. We've had two perfect days of sailing and couldn't ask for more. It's been great." Hijinks is Weyler's first boat. She's never competed at race week before, and Tuesday is a day that will live in her memory forever. Hijinks was named Boat of the Day after posting victories in both races. The crew now has the low score of 5 points and leads Ryan Ruhlman's (Bratenahl, OH) Spaceman Spiff by 6 points. In December the J/88 Class hired Christopher Howell for J/88 Class management.
